Temporary measures introduced during lockdown to help businesses continue trading are set to become a permanent fixture, as part of the proposed Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill.

First implemented in 2021, Fast Track Pavement Licences allowed the hospitality sector to continue trading outdoors when mixing with other households indoors was deemed unsafe.

While the licences were initially set to expire in September 2021, the measures have received two 12-month extensions, currently set to end on 30th September 2023.

However, the Department for Levelling up, Housing and Communities has revealed plans to make al fresco dining a permanent fixture, with Secretary of State Greg Clark describing it as a way to “level up communities and create vibrant places people want to live and work.”
