Bakery giant Greggs plans cafe move in Newcastle city centre

The bakery giant Greggs is planning a city centre move and looking to close its Grainger Street store and create a bigger one – complete with a café – yards away.

The popular chain launched a license bid to move from its store at 77 Grainger Street into 73-75 Grainger Street.

So long as the application is green lit, the new store promises to be bigger and better, including a café-style seating area for customers to dine in during the day.

The premise license application, submitted this week to Newcastle City Council, details how Greggs plan to open the retail bakery, servings it array of hot and cold food and drinks.

The application states: “Greggs currently operates in excess of 1,600 premises across the country, from their head offices in Jesmond.” “They also operate a number of premises, mostly in major city centres, with the addition of late night refreshment.” “Greggs have operated a premise with late night refreshment from 77 Grainger Street since 2009.”

This application will relocate the bakery giant to 73-75 Grainger Street, there is no intention to operate both premises.

“The applicant is happy to condition the licence however the licensing authority or police feel is appropriate in order to affect the transfer of the business from one site to the other.

“In terms of how this premise will trade late night refreshment from this site there will be very little difference from the current premise.

“Some of the conditions have been slightly altered to take into account of the fact that the premises will operate a cafe during the day.

“This cafe will not operate for late night refreshment and a shutter will close this area off from 11 pm onwards.”

Greggs plan to operate from 6:30 am-11:10 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, and from 6:30 am – 4:10 am every other day – the same trading hours as the store across the street.
