Newcastle City Council has granted a multi-use premises licence to Metropolitan House (HSG) Limited (Part of the High Street Group of companies) for 19-21 Collingwood Street, for their newest hotel development.

The site, which is to be transformed into The Metropolitan House Hotel, is located opposite Newcastle’s ‘Diamond Strip’ within the city’s cumulative impact policy area. License applicants within this area are required to prove that their venue will not add to the impact caused by existing establishments.

The High Street Group, the firm behind the recent takeover of the 55 Degrees North venues, Antler and Fat Buddha, the development of the Brett Oil site and the construction of the impressive Hadrian’s Tower in the city centre, were advised by Mincoffs Solicitors’ Head of Licensing, Matt Foster on the licence application.

Mr Foster commented: “We are very pleased with the result of this application, which is the culmination of over 6 months’ hard work, liaising with the Licensing Authority, Environmental Health and the police to ensure that The Metropolitan Hotel does not add to the impact of some of the bars around it.”

“It demonstrates the exceptionality of the application that we might be granted the licence within the Newcastle City Council cumulative impact policy area.  The licensing committee clearly understood what our client is looking to achieve in the City, by providing something very different to anything else on offer.”

Plans for The Metropolitan House Hotel include a 5th floor rooftop terrace with a large outdoor area, a ground floor ‘Boardwalk’ brasserie and a basement karaoke bar in the ‘Studio Rooms’ as well as 4 floors of boutique hotel rooms.

Mincoffs Solicitors’ Licensing and Corporate teams also acted for High Street Group in their recent acquisition of the 55 Degrees North venues from former Sunderland AFC Commercial Director, Gary Hutchinson.
