There are two types of ownership namely legal ownership (having your name on the deeds) and beneficial ownership (having an interest in the value). Whereas often the legal owner and beneficial owner are the same in some cases you may be able to claim you are a beneficial owner when you have been living as a unmarried couple and you have financial contributed to the home during the course of living there and/or there was an agreement/understanding with the person named on the deeds that you should have a share. Such cases can be difficult to prove and taking early expert advice is key.
